WHO WE ARE

George Basile, PhD
For over a decade Dr. George Basile has worked with leaders facing the most challenging issues of our time: environmental and social sustainability. In his work first at UC Berkeley, then as Chief Scientist at the Natural Step, and now as the co-founder and CEO of Thrive Unlimited and in partnership with sector leaders such as Bite Communications, George leads the creation and implementation of high-value sustainability business strategies, product evolution, tools and actions at Fortune 100 and start-up companies, leading non-profit organizations and with community leaders. George focuses on creating strategic alignment between business drivers and today’s emerging market needs. Past corporate clients include the Home Depot, Nike, Bank of America, McDonalds, IDEO, Sun Microsystems, Verdant Power, Sustainable Spaces, Sun Power and others.

George has served on the faculty of Stanford University and co-created a research area in the health effects of emerging technology at UC Berkeley. During his time at the Natural Step the organization won both Gorbachev’s Green Cross Award for Global Leadership and the Blue Planet Prize. George serves on a number of business and non-profit Boards, is widely published and speaks at a broad array of venues. He is a co-author of the text book Strategic Leadership Towards Sustainability and a co-founder of the newly established Center for Sustainability at Dominican University near his home in Northern California, where he is on the Faculty of the Green MBA. He holds a bachelor’s of science degree in Physics from UC Irvine and a Ph.D. in Biophysics from UC Berkeley. He loves to row, run and ride. George makes his home in both Southern and Northern California with his wife and two children.

Joe Mozdzen
Joe Mozdzen has headed his own design and branding firm almost since the day he left university in the eighties with a degree in Brand Communication and Graphic Design. Now a creative communications consultant, he works exclusively with environmental and social change organizations, progressive non-profits and corporate clients in the clean/green/well sector. As a co-founder of Thrive Unlimited, Joe hopes to bring sustainable marketing and communications to a new level where they may evolve to a more effective and positive force for change by aligning with intrinsic human values.

Joe is also a widely published photographer, copywriter, columnist, author, product designer, and restaurant concept consultant (having worked on over 100 restaurant projects). He has taught design, photography and sustainability at the university level, and also served for seven years as the editor and creative director of the award-winning publication, Making Waves, the international magazine of the Surfrider Foundation. Past and present clients include Giorgio Armani, California State University system, Southern California Edison, National Education Corporation, Pacific Symphony Orchestra, Sheraton Hotels, Heartwood Institute, China Environmental Fund, Audubon Society, California Energy Coalition, Surfrider Foundation, Ampelos (biodynamic winery), Alta Organics, and Native Sol. Joe is an avid hiker, backpacker, organic gardener, and permaculturist.
